A New Trend in Newborn Hospital Photography
So you are getting ready to have a baby. You are registering for all those sweet little baby things, organizing a nursery, packing your hospital bags, and enjoying feeling your sweet baby kick inside of you for those last few weeks. You are about to start a new and exciting chapter in your lives with a new baby. Whether it is your first baby or you are adding a little sister or brother to the bunch, it is an exciting time in your life and a time worth documenting. We get it, birth photography isn’t for everyone. Some people aren’t comfortable with the idea of it and that is okay. That is why we want to tell you about a new trend in photography that is quickly becoming a crowd favorite. People have been getting their baby’s picture taken in the hospital for years. We all have that baby picture in our baby book in the white hospital t-shirt with the hospital blanket. That one you dig out when someone in your family has a baby and you are trying to figure out who he or she looks like. The one that makes you think “woah I looked so little and a little beat up”. Hospital photographers have come a long way in the last few decades but they are limited by a contract with what pictures they can take and how much editing they can do with your pictures. That is why it is becoming popular to hire your own personal photographer to come and do a newborn hospital session instead. These sessions are called Fresh 48 Sessions.
What is a Fresh 48 Session?
Fresh 48 sessions take place during the first 24 to 48 hours of your baby’s life. These sessions truly capture the essence of those first few days with your new baby soaking in all of their “firsts” and those teeny little baby parts. Your baby will only be that tiny for a short time. By the time you get your newborn pictures taken after the first week or so your baby will likely already look different. These sessions are lifestyle sessions so we are capturing what is actually happening and all the details surrounding that. They allow everyone in your family a chance to be in the pictures and you won’t have to worry about trying to take all those pictures yourselves. We can capture those baby bracelets, baby hats, sweet headbands, snuggles with mom and dad, changing that first dirty diaper, the bassinet where your baby slept for the very first time, and sometimes even the first bath! If you still want that traditional hospital picture that you have in your own baby book we would be more than happy to take that picture as well.
A fresh 48 session is perfect for capturing siblings meeting the baby for the first time. The innocence of a child’s reaction to his or her new baby brother or sister is beautiful. Children react all sorts of ways to meeting a new baby and that is a memory you won’t ever want to forget. We have photographed cuddles, smiles, tears, curiosity, and even one big sister hiding behind the hospital curtain.
We can also capture your friends and family members coming to meet your new little one for the first time to preserve their reactions. We recently had a client tell us that she had found a picture of her daughter with her grandfather who had just passed away. The picture was from her fresh 48 session and she was overjoyed to have found it because she couldn’t even remember him coming to visit the baby in the hospital. Fresh 48 sessions can give you that peace of mind of never forgetting what was happening during your first few days. You will cherish the pictures of some of your first snuggles with your new baby forever.
What to Expect?
We are all Labor and Delivery nurses as well so we are very comfortable discussing any aspect of pregnancy and delivery with you. A lot of our clients have told us that is one of the reasons they have hired us over other photographers. The more informed you can keep us during the last few weeks of pregnancy the better! When you go into labor you or your family member will call, text, or email us to give us a heads up and allow us time to clear our schedules for you. When your baby is born you will contact us again and we will work out a time that works for you for one of us to come to the hospital to do your session sometime prior to you being discharged. When we arrive we will assess the lighting situation, maybe adjust a few blinds and lights to make sure we have enough natural light to give the best pictures possible, and begin the session. We just bring our camera and one or two lenses and a small external flash that we can put on our camera to help with the lighting if we need it. We won’t bring a lot of photography equipment to clutter your room. We want to capture the essence of your hospital room just as it is. Your session will last approximately one hour. We don’t put a time clock on the sessions and if we need a little longer to make sure we get all the pictures that you want that is perfectly fine. Sometimes babies need to eat during the middle of the session and sometimes they spit up on their outfit and need to be changed and if that happens we can just take a quick pause during the session. These sessions aren’t meant to be stressful so whatever we can do to help we will. After your session we will get you a handful of pictures within the first 24 hours so that you can use them to share with friends and family, to announce on social media, or to get a birth announcement ordered. You will receive the rest of your digital images within two weeks of your session, sometimes sooner if we can! We deliver your images to you via a password protected online gallery. This will allow you to download all your full sized files directly to your computer and to share the gallery with out of town friends and family if you choose to do so without the hassle of a USB.
How Do We Prepare?
When you are packing your hospital bags make sure to throw in any outfits and accessories that you would like your baby to wear for his or her pictures. It is always a good idea to pack at least one nice looking swaddle blanket. Sometimes they get a little fussy and are easily soothed by being swaddled. There is not a limit to how many outfits that we can photograph your baby in, however they usually get upset when they are changed so our recommendation would be no more than two outfits. Mom and Dad can wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. We recommend that your baby has been changed and fed prior to our arrival if possible that way they are content when we arrive. You don’t need to worry about trying to clean up your hospital room. We will make sure to move things if they are distracting to our shots but most of the time the natural hospital room setting is perfect. Some moms feel a little better and more refreshed by getting a shower and applying a little bit of makeup before we come but that is completely up to you. We will collect all session fees before coming to your session so you will not have to worry about bringing cash or your checkbook to the hospital.
What is Included With My Session?
Your session includes a minimum of 25 digital images (usually more). Your images will be delivered to you in a combination of color and black and white. We always link a professional printing lab to your gallery if you would like to purchase professional prints through us but we will also give you the rights to print your pictures wherever you would like.
